Housing Services
Inspiration Corporation provides its guests and alumni with 47 units of rental housing subsidized through the Chicago Low-Income Housing Trust Fund and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. These studio and one-bedroom apartments are located in the Uptown, Lakeview and Woodlawn communities, within walking distance of Inspiration Cafe and The Living Room Cafe.
To help individuals maintain their housing, program staff visits them regularly and coordinates the provision of “wrap-around” social services to them. Through this approach, tenants have ready access to case management, therapeutic communities, meals, support for recovery from addictions, and access to employment training, mental and primary healthcare and other needed services. Staff also work with area landlords to identify affordable housing opportunities to match with program participants who have an income.
Inspiration Corporation also plays a leading role in the City of Chicago's Rental Housing Support Services Program, which provides rental subsidies to individuals and families with long tenure in the homeless services system. Inspiration Corporation is working to place 160 households into permanent housing across the city in 2007-2008, and will provide housing retention services to help residents maintain stability.
“For the most part, being a member of Inspiration Cafe, my overall outlook on life has been enhanced, because now I am in housing so I can confidently look at things without the fear of having to move.”
Shirioni, Housing Program Resident
